AMC’s “Fear the Walking Dead” Trailer Gives 15 Second Hint: Zombies Invade L.A.

George A. Romero would be proud (sort of), because AMC’s gore-fest classic is about to get another spinoff dose of zombies this summer, set in L.A., in what is being called “Fear the Walking Dead.”

The “Fear the Walking Dead” trailer has just been released on YouTube. It offers little insight in its roughly 15-second run-time, save for the fact that the setting is obviously L.A., and also that the zombie virus has just begun to get noticed in a few cities. With residents being warned to stay at home if they are not feeling well, so warns a radio announcer’s bleak voice in the background.

It will be interesting to see how the series spins itself off to a new breeding ground for zombies. In “The Walking Dead,” Rick Grimes awakes during episode one, after recovering from being shot, to realize that while he was in a coma, the entire world has ended and is now occupied by hordes of the undead.

In the new spinoff, it clearly takes a different twist, and setting. Offering a more palpably gruesome start, with the megalopolis of L.A. as the location and with the zombie plague only having just begun.

A well-rounded cast has been slated to play the leading roles, so one has to think that AMC won’t disappoint here. Cliff Curtis (“Gang Related”) will play Sean Cabrera, a teacher. Kim Dickens (“Sons of Anarchy”) will play a guidance counselor named Nancy who works with Cabrera and is intimate with him. Frank Dillane (“Harry Potter”) will star as Dickens’ son. And Alycia Debnam Carey (“Into the Woods”) will play as Nancy’s daughter. All will be involved in the birthing of the zombie apocalypse.

Based upon the popular comic book series by Robert Kirkman, AMC has realized unrivaled success with its parent series. Kirkman and Dave Erickson are co-writers and executive producers, with Gale Anne Hurd, Dave Alpert, Greg Nicotero and Adam Davidson co-directing.

AMC has picked up six preliminary episodes so far. They are set to debut sometime in the summer, TBA.
