“Back To The Future” – DeLorean Carmaker To Resume Production After 30 Year Hiatus

Most people have seen and fallen in love with the hit 80s popcorn flick, “Back to the Future.” The famous DeLorean automobile that was converted into a time machine by Doc has become a cult classic staple in the years that have spanned since the film’s release.

But car collectors may want to rethink building theirs just yet because emerging stories are revealing that the car could be making a revival and could enter into reproduction in the near future.

According to the The DeLorean Motor Company – a company that is not associated with the original company that was founded by John DeLorean – they are going to begin production on the DMC-12, which was recently approved by the federal government for manufacturing. The news was first broke on Houston news outlet KPRC2 and it continues to circulate the web.

The carmaker has plans to create 300 exact replica models of the classic 1982 DeLorean that was made famous as a time machine in the movie series.

DMC CEO Stephen Wynne said that production will begin with one car per month, but will be able to increase to one per week as time passes. “It’s fantastic. It is a game-changer for us. We’ve been wanting this to happen,” Wynne said to KPRC2.

Previous to the movie series, DMC was insolvent by 1982. Only 9,000 DeLorean cars were ever manufactured. John DeLorean’s estate recently sued the DeLorean Motor Company, but the suit was settled.

In the near future, this means that these cars will still be rare, but not nearly as rare as they are considered at the present — with parts costing an arm and a leg (when you can find them). So for collectors, this may mean that their car is a little aged. But for die hard fans, it’s like a blast from the past.

What’s it going to cost to go back in time? Current estimates are at about $95,000 per unit.

Eat your heart out, Marty McFly.
